Masuria for Beginners – 10 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Cruise

Masuria for Beginners – 10 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Cruise

1. A yachtsman's sailing licence is essential

To independently skipper a cabin yacht in Masuria, you need a yachtsman's sailing licence or a higher grade. The course can be taken year-round – practical training usually takes place in spring, so you're ready before the season. Without a licence, you can still set sail with one of our certified skippers – contact us and we'll put together the right package for you.

2. Masuria is inland water, but the wind can get serious

The Masurian lakes can be treacherous in stronger winds. Waves on the large bodies of water (Śniardwy, Mamry) build up quickly and can catch inexperienced helmsmen off guard. Check the weather forecast every day and don't disregard IMGW meteorological warnings.

3. Lake Śniardwy – the largest in Poland

Lake Śniardwy covers over 110 km² and can be genuinely demanding in strong wind. For your first cruise, we recommend crossing it in calm weather or using a side canal. Still, it's a sight you need to see at least once!

4. A weekly charter is the optimal length

A week in Masuria lets you discover the most beautiful spots without feeling rushed. A shorter charter (3–4 days) can be stressful for beginners – it takes several hours before you feel comfortable on board. A weekly cruise gives you room to get to know the yacht and the route at a relaxed pace.

5. Locks and canals – be prepared to queue

On a route through Masuria you'll pass through more than a dozen locks. At peak season, waiting times can range from 30 minutes to several hours. Plan your route with a time buffer, and treat waiting at a lock as an opportunity to relax and chat with other sailors.

6. Marinas – book ahead

Popular marinas (Mikołajki, Giżycko, Ryn, Węgorzewo) fill up by midday in July and August. Call ahead or use a berth-booking app. Alternatively, anchoring off a wild beach is often a better option than a crowded marina.

7. Cooking on board – plan your shopping wisely

Every yacht in our fleet is equipped with a stove and a fridge. Plan your shopping for at least 2–3 days ahead – shops in smaller towns may have a limited range. Do your bigger shopping in Giżycko or Mikołajki before setting off.

8. Child safety on board

If you're bringing children, make sure when booking that we have life jackets in the right size – please tell us the children's ages in advance. While the yacht is underway, children should always have their life jackets on.

9. Apps that make your cruise easier

  • Navionics – nautical charts with up-to-date depths
  • Windy – detailed wind and weather forecasts
  • Mariny.pl – marina information, reviews, bookings
  • IMGW Meteo – official weather forecasts and warnings

10. Relaxation is the goal, not an obstacle

Don't plan overly ambitious routes for your first cruise. It's better to spend two days anchored off a beautiful, empty beach than to rush between marinas. Masuria rewards those who can slow down and enjoy the silence, the water and a night sky full of stars.
