Masuria by Yacht – The Best Week-Long Route for Beginners
The Great Masurian Lakes offer hundreds of kilometres of waterways. For someone sailing here for the first time, choosing a route can be tricky. Below you'll find a tried-and-tested proposal that combines the most beautiful waters with sensible daily distances – perfectly suited to a weekly charter from our port in Wilkasy.
Starting point: Wilkasy near Giżycko
The MUNDI CZARTER port is located in Wilkasy, a few minutes' drive from the centre of Giżycko. You pick up the yacht between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm on the first day of the charter. Lake Niegocin, on which the port sits, is a great place to "warm up" – wide, well marked, with several marinas nearby.
Suggested weekly route
Day 1 – Wilkasy → Mikołajki (~25 km)
After check-in and loading up, you sail south across Lake Niegocin and Lake Tałty. Mikołajki is the "capital of Masuria" – a beautiful marina, a promenade full of restaurants and an atmospheric market square. We recommend planning at least one night here.
Day 2 – Mikołajki → Lake Śniardwy
Śniardwy is the largest lake in Poland – over 110 km². Excellent for sailing in wind, but demanding respect: no intermediate ports, waves that build up quickly. Set off in the morning while the wind is still calm.
Day 3 – Mikołajki → Ruciane-Nida (~20–30 km)
You sail south across Lake Roś and then through canals. Ruciane-Nida is a charming little town with a quiet marina, close to the Piska Forest.
Day 4 – return via Giżycko (~35 km)
The key stretch of the route. You pass through the historic Guzianka Lock and sail through Lakes Bełdany, Tałty and Niegocin straight to Giżycko. Giżycko is the largest town on the Masurian Lakes – Boyen Fortress, a rotating bridge and well-stocked shops.
Day 5 – Giżycko → Węgorzewo (~25 km)
North across Lake Kisajno to the quiet town of Węgorzewo. The Węgorzewo Canal leads to Lake Mamry – a picturesque route with numerous bays.
Day 6 – Węgorzewo → Ryn or Giżycko (~20–30 km)
Head back south, stopping at Ryn. The Teutonic castle in Ryn is one of the most beautiful in Masuria. For the night, it's best to return to the Giżycko area or straight to Wilkasy.
Day 7 – Return and handing back the yacht
You return the yacht by 11:00 am. The last morning is a good time for a relaxed breakfast in Wilkasy and reflecting on your memories.
Practical tips
- Maps and charts – download the zegluj.pl app or buy a paper map of the Great Masurian Lakes before your cruise.
- Port fees – you pay for mooring at every marina (5–25 PLN per metre of yacht length). Always keep cash on you.
- Wind – check the weather every morning. Winds on the Masurian Lakes can change quickly. Treat Śniardwy and Mamry with respect.
- Locking through – the Guzianka lock operates seasonally. Check the opening hours before setting off.
- Mooring – during the season, marinas can fill up by midday. Plan to arrive before 2:00 pm.
