When to Sail to Masuria? Weather and the Best Times of the Sailing Season

The Masurian sailing season, month by month

The sailing season in Masuria officially runs from May 1 to September 30, though in good weather sailors head out as early as April and continue sailing into October. Each month has its own rules – find a detailed breakdown below.

May – the pioneers of the season

May is a month for those who value peace and quiet and low prices. The lakes are almost empty, marinas have spots available without booking, and charter prices are up to 30–40% lower than at peak season. Downsides: the water is still cold (approx. 14–17°C), evenings are cool, and there's a risk of unstable weather. But the days are already long, and nature is exceptionally green and fresh.

June – the sweet spot for experienced sailors

According to many sailors, the second half of June is the best time of the whole season. The water warms up to 18–20°C, days are at their longest of the year, and the waters aren't yet packed with tourists. The chances of strong, steady wind are higher than in scorching July, which often sees calm spells. Charter prices are still lower than at peak season.

July – peak season, the best weather

July is the month of maximum occupancy and the best weather at the same time. Air temperatures reach 25–30°C, the water is around 22–24°C, and the nights are warm. Downsides: crowded marinas (booking essential), queues at locks, higher prices for all services. Book at least 3–4 months in advance.

August – summer in full swing

Very similar to July, with a slightly higher chance of summer storms in the second half of the month. Water temperature stays at its peak (approx. 23–25°C). Towards the end of August, tourist traffic starts to drop, which is great news for anyone who can extend their holiday into the last week of the month.

September – "golden autumn" for connoisseurs

September in Masuria is a secret known only to a few. The lakes are almost empty, marinas happily welcome guests, and prices return to spring levels. The weather can be temperamental, but the first two weeks of September are often beautiful. The water is still around 18–20°C, and the forests start to blaze with autumn colours. Evenings call for warmer clothing, but a starry sky free of tourist lights is unmatched.

Water and air temperature – seasonal table

Month Air temp. (°C) Water temp. (°C) Crowd levels Our prices
May 12–20 12–17 Low Lowest
June 17–25 17–21 Medium Moderate
July 22–30 21–24 Very high Highest
August 21–29 22–25 High High
September 13–22 17–20 Low Low

Weather and wind – what to expect?

Masuria lies in a temperate continental climate zone. The wind blows most often from westerly and south-westerly directions, averaging 3–4 on the Beaufort scale during the season. Stronger winds occur more often in June than in July, which makes "green June" a favourite among experienced racing sailors.

Summer storms are a normal occurrence in Masuria – most often in July and August, usually in the afternoon. Rule of thumb: if a dark wall of cloud appears on the horizon along with the characteristic "storm roll", head quickly for a marina or an anchorage. IMGW regularly issues warnings, which are worth following via a mobile app.

When is the weather best? Our recommendations

  • For families with children: July or the first half of August – warm, safe, full range of attractions
  • For experienced sailors looking for wind: June – the best wind, empty waters
  • For budget travellers: May or September – low prices, guaranteed peace and quiet
  • For nature lovers: September – golden colours, bird migration, wild places
