Cruising with Children in Masuria – How to Sail Safely with the Whole Family?

Is a cruise with children in Masuria a good idea?

Absolutely – Masuria is one of the best waters in Europe for a family cruise. Inland lakes are calmer than the sea, distances between marinas are short, and our infrastructure in Wilkasy is family-friendly. Every season, many families set off from our base, and they come back to us year after year.

From what age can a child sail on a yacht?

There's no lower age limit – even infants can go on cruises if the parents are properly prepared. In practice, though, the best age for a first cruise with children is 4–6 years old, when a child understands basic safety rules and can sit still for longer periods. Older children (8+) usually get actively involved in sailing and treat it as a great adventure.

How to choose a family yacht?

When choosing a yacht with children in mind, pay attention to:

  • High guardrails and a safety netting – netting fitted along the lifelines is an absolute must; it eliminates the risk of falling overboard while playing
  • A low cockpit – makes it easier to keep an eye on children and is safer during manoeuvres
  • Two separate cabins – comfortable sleeping for the whole family; children in the bow cabin, adults in the stern one
  • A stable, wide hull – less heeling means less fear for children on their first cruises

Get in touch and tell us the composition and ages of the children – we'll help you choose the best unit from our fleet.

Safety equipment for children

  • A life jacket in the right size (the child's body weight determines the class) – have it on the whole time the yacht is underway
  • A harness with a safety tether for children up to about 6 years old – clips the child to a fixed point in the cockpit
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat – UV intensity is significantly higher on the water
  • Motion-sickness tablets for children (after consulting a paediatrician)

Planning a route with children – key rules

  • Short legs – plan a maximum of 3–4 hours of sailing per day; children quickly need to move around on dry land
  • Swimming spots along the route – plan stops at beaches and bathing areas; for children this is often the highlight of the day
  • A flexible schedule – if the children are having a great time at anchor, stay longer; there's no need to rush
  • Shopping with a buffer – children eat more often; stock up with at least a 2-day supply of food

What do children like most on a yacht?

Based on years of experience with families who've chartered yachts from us, we know that children on board most enjoy:

  • Holding the helm under adult supervision – even a 5-year-old feels like the captain then
  • Watching wildlife: herons, beavers in the evening by the shore, water turtles
  • Jumping off the side into the lake at anchor – an unforgettable summer memory
  • Taking part in locking through – watching a lock close is a real show for kids

Charter without a licence – an option for families

If no one in the family holds a sailing licence, we can help arrange a cruise with an experienced skipper, who will sail the yacht and, if anyone's interested, teach the basics of sailing along the way. It's a great option for families with children.
