The Most Beautiful Sailing Routes in Masuria – Trails You Need to Know
The Great Masurian Lakes trail – a 7-day classic
The Great Masurian Lakes trail is the most popular sailing route in Poland, around 120 km long. Traditionally it's sailed from Węgorzewo through Giżycko and Mikołajki, all the way to Pisz on Lake Roś. Covering the entire trail takes around 7 days, at a relaxed pace with overnight stays at marinas.
The route passes through the largest and most beautiful lakes of the Great Masurian Lakes: Mamry, Niegocin, Śniardwy (the largest lake in Poland – over 110 km²), Mikołajskie and Łuknajno. Along the way you'll find more than a dozen locks, charming small towns and plenty of opportunities to anchor off a wild beach.
Key points along the route
- Węgorzewo – the starting point, a Sailing Port with full infrastructure
- Sztynort – a romantic lime-tree avenue and the historic Lehndorff Castle
- Giżycko – Masuria's sailing hub, Boyen Fortress, drawbridges
- Mikołajki – the "capital of Masuria", a lively town centre, a mute swan reserve
- Śniardwy – the largest lake, open water – a scenic challenge for every sailor
- Ruciane-Nida – a cosy small town amid the forests, gateway to the Piska Forest
The Giżycko–Mikołajki trail – perfect for a weekend or a short week
This stretch of over 37 km is one of the most spectacular sections of the Great Masurian Lakes. The route runs through Lakes Niegocin, Tałty and Mikołajskie, passing through the Tałty Canal and the Ryn Canal. It can be covered in 2–3 days one way, though it's recommended to return by a different route to see more.
For crews starting from our base in Wilkasy (Giżycko), this is the most natural axis for a weekly cruise – we recommend it as the go-to plan for your first season.
The Swan Trail – for nature lovers
One of the more intimate trails, running through the south-western part of Lake Kisajno. It stands out for its wealth of islands, straits and remarkable concentrations of birds. Along the way you can spot cranes, grey herons, black kites and ospreys. An ideal route for relaxed cruises with children or for nature photographers.
The Mikołajki–Ruciane-Nida trail – nature and quiet
One of the most picturesque routes in the entire Great Masurian Lakes system. It runs through Lakes Bełdany and Guzianka – narrow, wooded, remarkably charming. Lake Bełdany, surrounded by the walls of the Piska Forest, offers sailors a level of tranquillity rarely found on busier waters.
The Giżycko–Węgorzewo trail – heading north
The route heading north from Giżycko, through Lakes Kisajno, Dargin and Mamry, is a paradise for sailors seeking space and wind. Lake Mamry (the second largest in Masuria) offers excellent sailing conditions in a stronger breeze, and historic Węgorzewo is a great place for a stopover.
