Sailing Licence in Masuria 2027 – A Charter Requirement at MUNDI CZARTER
A sailing licence is one of the first topics we discuss with every new client. The answer is unambiguous: we require a valid sailing licence for every yacht in our fleet. Below we explain why this matters and exactly what you need to have with you on pick-up day.
A sailing licence is required on every MUNDI CZARTER yacht
All yachts in our fleet require the helmsman to hold a yachtsman's sailing licence (or a higher grade, e.g. offshore yacht skipper). There are no exceptions – this applies to every unit at our port in Wilkasy.
This requirement stems primarily from a concern for safety on the water. At the height of the season, Masuria's waters are busy – the marina in Giżycko or Mikołajki requires confident manoeuvring in a confined space, and Lake Śniardwy can whip up dangerous waves in a short time.
What licence is sufficient?
The minimum required document is a PZŻ (Polish Yachting Association) yachtsman's sailing licence (or an equivalent document recognised in Poland). We also accept higher grades: offshore yacht skipper, yacht captain.
When picking up the yacht, the skipper of the crew is required to present the original document. Without a licence, we will refuse to hand over the yacht – so please make sure you're properly qualified before making a booking.
Where can I get a sailing licence?
The yachtsman's sailing licence is issued by the Polish Yachting Association (PZŻ). The course consists of a theoretical part and practical training on the water:
- Theory – right of way, meteorology, rigging, rescue and regulations. A weekend course or one spread over several evenings. Cost: approx. 300–600 PLN.
- Practice – on-water training under an instructor's guidance. Sailing schools offer courses lasting 5–7 days. Cost: approx. 600–1,200 PLN.
- Exam – organised by PZŻ committees at local sailing clubs. After passing both parts, you receive a licence valid for life.
Courses are run by sailing schools throughout Poland – you can find them on pya.org.pl or on the websites of local regional sailing associations.
Licence vs. experience on the water
The licence is a formality – but experience makes the difference. If you've only recently obtained your licence and are planning your first solo cruise, we recommend:
- Starting with a shorter route rather than pushing long stretches across open lakes.
- Checking the weather forecast every morning (the Windy app or Meteo.pl).
- Not heading out onto Lake Śniardwy in winds above Beaufort force 4 without an experienced crew.
- Making sure, before setting off, that everyone on board knows where the first-aid kit and life jackets are.
Navigation in Masuria
Good navigation is a key element of a safe cruise. We recommend downloading the zegluj.pl app to your phone – up-to-date maps of the Great Masurian Lakes with depths, trail markings and route-planning capability. It's the most convenient navigation tool available for Polish lakes.
